What is Shotokan karate?

Shotokan karate is a Japanese defensive martial art based on the principles and teachings of Gichin Funakoshi. It is considered a "hard" style martial art, compared to "soft" styles like aikido. Karate is basically a punching, kicking, blocking, striking martial art. Within the ISKF, Shotokan is practiced as a non-contact martial art. We place great emphasis on etiquette, respect, self-control and discipline. The primary goal of this martial art is character development.

Can I start any time?

We accept new students throughout the semester. It is preferable that you begin training at the start of a semester with the other new students. Space is limited for new students under age 10. Please contact Sensei Becky to see if space is available for your child. If not, you can place your child on a waiting list for space as it becomes available.

Can I try a few classes before I sign up?

YES! We encourage you to watch or participate in a few classes before you make a committment to train. There are many different martial art styles. Shotokan does not appeal to everyone.

Do I need a uniform?

Yes. Once you commit to training, you will need to purchase a white gi. This can be ordered through your instructor at a considerable savings. Student weight uniforms run $20-$30 depending on size.

How long before I become a black belt?

Rank within the ISKF organization is earned through hard work and dedication. Martial arts training is considered to be a lifetime endeavor. Belt testing is available three times per year. Not every student will be ready to test each time. The average adult student who trains regularly and with diligence can attain black belt rank in approximately five years. However, if attaining a black belt is your ultimate goal, you should consider another martial art style or club. Our primary emphasis is on the perfection of character and not on acquiring belt ranks or trophies. Please see our club's Senior Student Requirements.

Will karate teach my child good manners?

Shotokan karate will help reinforce discipline and self-control and help teach respect for self and others. However, one-on-one instruction is very limited. Your child will be required to demonstrate focus and self-control appropriate for their age and not be a disruption to the class as a whole.

Can I train with my child?

YES! Children who train with their parents generally do better, learn faster, and stay committed longer. If your primary goal is to train with your child, you may remain in the same class with your child rather than advancing at your own rate.

Am I too old to start?

NO! You're never too old to begin training. Each individual's path in the martial arts is unique. Yours may just have more speed bumps than that of a 7 year old.

Can I do karate even if I have an injury, illness or disability?

As with any other physical activity, you should always get your doctor's permission before beginning a martial arts program, particularly if you have any health concerns. We welcome students of all ages and physical abilities and will be happy to help modify training so it works for you. If you or your child require one-on-one instruction/supervision or instructors trained in special needs areas, please visit the Alaska Moving Arts Center web site for class information.

Will I get hit?

Sparring (fighting) is controlled and choreographed within Shotokan karate for the first several years and belt ranks. Progress toward free-sparring occurs slowly and with emphasis on control. Learning that you can get hit and still defend yourself is a very important part of the process.
